First identify where the failure happens: before the menu, while joining a server, or during a match. These are different symptoms. Record the full message before changing settings or reinstalling.
Choose the right starting point
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| WD-L020 before the main menu | Read the current Team17 WD-L020 notice. |
| Missing content or repeatable local crash | Consider Steam’s file verification procedure. |
| Queue or server join failure | Check current official announcements and the selected server. |
| Game runs but feels slow | Use the requirements and performance checklist. |
Verify local files through Steam
Steam’s support instructions are: restart the computer and open Steam; find the game in Library, open Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Allow the check to finish.
Verification checks the installation. It does not establish whether a server is online or guarantee that a launcher compatibility issue will be fixed. Avoid running multiple game verifications or other intensive maintenance at the same time.
Make the next report useful
- Record the exact error and when it appears.
- Include the time and time zone for a connection failure.
- List game version, Windows version, CPU, GPU and RAM.
- Describe the shortest steps that reproduce the problem.
- Say what changed recently and which checks you already completed.
Do not disable security protections or use unofficial replacement files simply because an undated comment claims they improve FPS. Start with the official support instructions that match your symptom.
